The keynote speaker was Mr. Rajeev Sreetharan, a lawyer from the United States. He is also the co-founder of Third Eye, which provides pro bono counsel in the practice areas of genocide. He conducted interviews with about 100 witnesses and about 50 video depositions in the last two years of legal research. Rajeev also analyzed the UNHRC and iNGO findings and presented a legal strategy that can be adopted by Tamil activists and the government to bring Sri Lanka to ICJ for the crimes of genocide. He also mentioned that it’s important to document the witness statements in affidavit format and connect the historical facts to strategize proper legal arguments. He praised the Government of Canada on the declaration of May 18th as the Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day and recognition of the Tamil Genocide. He also commended the work of human rights defenders and Tamil activists in bending the long curve toward justice while geopolitics bent it toward injustice.
Ottawa West – Nepean MP Anita Vandenbeld and Ottawa Centre MP. Yasir Naqvi delivered greetings from Prime Minister Hon. Justin Trudeau. The Prime Minister acknowledged the countless contributions made by Tamil Canadians to Canada and congratulated the Ottawa Tamil Association on the successful event. He also shared best wishes to the Tamil community on occasion. MP Anita Vendenbeld also recognised the keynote speaker’s message and said the Tamil Genocide was recognised in Canada. She further stressed that it is important to hold Sri Lanka accountable through international mechanisms. Nepean MP Chandra Arya delivered his remarks on Tamil Heritage.
Sherwood Park MP Garnett Genuis delivered the Honourable Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre’s message with Northumberland—Peterborough MP. Philip Lawrence, Calgary Heritage MP Shuvloy Majumdar and Nepean Candidate Ms Babara Bal. MP Garnett mentioned the promise for genocides like the Tamil genocide to never repeat. He further said executive resources of the government of Canada should be used to bring perpetrators of genocide accountable.
Associate Minister of Transportation Hon. Vijay Thanigasalam delivered Ontario Premier Hon. Doug Ford’s message on the Tamil Heritage Month. He recalled that in 2009 when Tamil Canadians were desperate, Canada helped. He also thanked the youth and the supporters who made the Tamil Genocide Education Week act possible at the Ontario parliament.
Minister Hon. Gary Anandasangaree thanked the Ottawa Tamil Association for its continued leadership. He also said in the last 15 years, Tamil Diaspora continuously voiced for justice and freedom for Tamil Eelam Tamils.
One of the five GoFly competitors, the Challengers Team was recognized by the Ottawa Tamil Association for their innovation and contribution to Canada. The team designed and built a prototype autonomous flying vehicle that can carry the average weight of a human and participated at the GoFly final fly-off at NASA’s Ames Research Center (California) in 2020.
Acting Superintendent Dave Zackrias and Sergeant Balasundaram Sathiyenthira of the Ottawa Police Services were present on behalf of the law enforcement community. They commended the discipline and unity of the Tamil community. Ottawa Mayor Hon. Mark Sutcliffe, members of Ottawa Police, paramedics from Cornwall, MPP John Fraser, and former MPP Mr Jack Mclaren are some of the dignitaries who attended the Gala 2024.
Classical dances, Tamil vocal and musical performances, ancient Tamil martial arts practice, exhibits of Tamil culture, and insightful speeches by the youth kept the guests entertained. Performances were contributed by Tamil Canadian youth from Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa communities. The evening also ended Tamil Heritage Month festivities by Tamil Canadians from coast to coast. The Tamil Heritage Month Act – Bill 156 was passed in Ontario on March 25, 2014. In October 2016, the House of Commons voted unanimously on a motion to recognize January as Tamil Heritage Month across Canada.
