The drive honours the memory of Thiyagi Thileepan. On September 15, 1987, in Tamil Eelam, he began a hunger strike calling for the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord to be honoured. He made five demands: the release of all Tamil political prisoners held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, an end to Sinhala colonization of Tamil areas, the withdrawal of Sri Lankan armed forces from schools in Tamil villages, the closure of new police stations in Tamil areas, and the formation of an interim administration for the North-East province. Tamils hoped India would listen. After 12 days without food or water, Thileepan died on September 26, 1987. Each September, as we remember his fast, we choose to give food to those in need in our own city.
