Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day May 18, 2026: Ottawa Tamil Community Unites in Emotional Remembrance and Calls for Justice

June 11, 2026 — Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day May 18, 2026: Ottawa Tamil Community Unites in Emotional Remembrance and Calls for Justice

On May 18, 2026, Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day was observed with profound emotion in Canada’s capital, Ottawa, marking the 17th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s genocide against Tamils in Mullivaikkal in 2009. The event, organized by various Tamil community organizations, brought together over 200 people, including survivors, Tamil nationalist activists, and dignitaries, to honour the memory of those lost in the atrocities. The commemoration was held at the Walter Baker Sports Center. The event was meticulously coordinated by organizations including the Ottawa Tamil Association (OTA), Ottawa Senior Tamil Association (OTSA), National Capital Region Tamil Association (NCRTA), Tamil Genocide Memorial (TGM), and Ottawa Tamil Arts and Technology College (OTACT).

The ceremony commenced at 2:15 PM with a tribute to the Indigenous peoples of the land, followed by the Canadian national anthem and the Tamil anthem, Tamil Thaai Vazhthu. A moment of silence set a solemn tone, leading into heartfelt speeches, poetry recitations, and reflections that evoked the painful memories of the genocide. A small Mullivaikkal memorial pillar, symbolizing the tragedy, was displayed, and attendees paid their respects individually. Mullivaikkal porridge, a poignant reminder of the starvation endured during the final days of the conflict, was served to participants.

In a powerful address on behalf of the Ottawa Tamil Association, the speaker underscored the Tamil people’s collective punishment for exercising their right to self-determination and defending their own government in Tamil Eelam. The speech traced the community’s unbreakable resolve for justice since 2009, recalling how thousands of Tamil Canadians stood vigil on Parliament Hill pleading for a ceasefire. It highlighted Canada’s moral leadership, boycotting the Commonwealth summit in Colombo, co-sponsoring the 2015 UNHRC resolution, unanimously declaring May 18 as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day in 2022, imposing sanctions, and formal recognition by the Prime Minister and opposition leaders in 2023.

The OTA speech also mentioned the key milestones in the journey of remembrance: the inauguration of the first Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton last year, and the official launch, just days earlier on May 12, 2026 (coinciding with the opening of Tamil Genocide Education Week and the 50th anniversary of the Vaddukoddai Resolution), of the project to build Ottawa’s own Tamil Genocide Monument in Canada’s capital. Modelled after the Brampton memorial but distilled into a minimalist “open book” design resting on a solid concrete base, the monument will feature the inscription of Tamil Eelam (Self-Determination) at its heart. It will serve as a permanent educational landmark, a sacred place for remembrance, a bridge for healing intergenerational trauma, and a bold counter to genocide denial.

Additionally, the Ottawa Tamil Association, jointly with other Tamil organizations, released the research booklet Justice for Sri Lanka’s Genocide Against Tamils and continues to advance this vital fact-finding work. As part of the Tamil Genocide Education Project, a key new publication introduced at the event was the detailed analysis of the Sri Lankan Army’s “No Fire Zone” declarations during the 2009 Vanni campaign. The research demonstrates that these unilateral declarations created no legally protected zones under international humanitarian law and instead functioned as military information operations to concentrate Tamil civilians into kill zones while shaping international perceptions.

MP Bruce Fanjoy delivered opening remarks on behalf of the federal government. He thanked the Tamil community for their significant contributions to Canada and acknowledged the painful circumstances that brought many of them to the country. Emphasizing the importance of not only remembering genocide but also recognizing its early signs to prevent future atrocities.. MP Fanjoy then read an official message from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to mark Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day. The Prime Minister’s statement honoured the tens of thousands of civilian lives lost during the quarter-century-long Sri Lankan Civil War and noted that Canada is home to one of the largest Tamil diasporas in the world. It highlighted the 2022 unanimous parliamentary vote to recognize May 18 as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day and reaffirmed Canada’s ongoing commitment to international accountability, human rights, and justice.

Ms. Barbara Ball, representing the opposition Conservative Party and speaking on behalf of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, delivered a powerful message from the party leader. She emphasized the importance of mourning the victims of this horrific period, honouring the resilience of the survivors, and continuing the unwavering call for accountability and justice. She highlighted a strong commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators of these crimes face justice, stating firmly that Canada must not become a place of refuge for those responsible for genocide. Paul proudly noted Canada’s history of standing up on this issue, referencing former Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s principled decision to boycott the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka as an expression of solidarity and protest. She concluded by offering solidarity with the Tamil community during this solemn remembrance and expressing shared hopes for a peaceful and just future.

The evening concluded with the serving of Mullivaikkal porridge, a symbolic act that revived memories of the genocide’s final days. The program ended around 8:00 PM, leaving attendees with a renewed sense of purpose in their pursuit of justice.

The Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day in Ottawa, officially recognized by the Canadian Parliament for the third year, served as a powerful reminder of the community’s resilience and the ongoing global call for justice and accountability for the atrocities committed in 2009.
